I was discharged after two years in a mental hospital. My husband was suing me for divorce and custody of both children. I could not go home; I was obliged to move into a YWCA residence in Boston. I got a job with a printing company.

  • Mental health treatment, especially inpatient treatment, is based on a negative goalóstopping ìmadî thoughtsórather than working constructively with mad energies.
  • Institutionalization itself creates alienation and social fears.
  • Mental health providers should treat the events of psychosis with respect, rather than rejecting, out of hand, both their content and their meaning.
  • Intensive support is needed when people are discharged from an institution.
